Stefania Fernandez won the pageant and is the reigning Miss Universe 2009. She is the 6th Miss Universe from Venezuela and was crowned by the outgoing titleholder, Dayana Mendoza, Miss Venezuela 2007 and Miss Universe 2008, which made Venezuela the first country to claim the title two years in a row.
Of the 83 women, those who made it to the top five were the contestants from Dominican Republic (first runner-up), followed by Kosovo, Australia, and Puerto Rico.
Her prize package includes cash, a year contract promoting Miss Universe, prestigious New York City luxury apartment and a gift bag stuffed with designer shoes, dresses and beauty products, , world travel, a US$100,000 stipend for a two-year course at the New York Film Academy and free access to famous fashion houses and beauty parlors. Fernandez will spend her year-long reign traveling the world as an ambassador for the pageant and promoting education regarding AIDS/HIV awareness and other humanitarian issues. The official decision was made by a 12-person judging panel that included the editor-at-large for American Vogue, Andre Leon Talley, "superman" actor Dean Cain, and supermodel Valeria Mazza.
Stefania Fernández is of Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, and Polish origin, and was born in September 4, 1990, in Mérida, Venezuela. She plans to go to college and specialize in communications, and is also interested in pursuing English and French.
Stefania moved from her hometown of Merida to the city of San Cristobal two years ago to pursue her dream. She says in her interviews that this Miss Universe crown fulfills her lifelong dream.
